Sooner or later, you’re going to realize that success doesn’t come to those who sit around waiting for permission in life. You have to go out there and make sh*t happen.
Period.
My advice (to my younger self, my younger brother and anyone trying to make things happen):
- Stop waiting for permission to do something awesome
- Silence the inner critic
- Don’t ever be afraid to fail
- When you do fail, get up and try again
- Remember, your ideas are better than you think they are (see #2)
- Ignore the haters (they too are critics; see #2)
- Ignore negative people (they’re energy mongers)
- Stop waiting for things to be perfect because they never will be
- Execute (remember #8)
You’ll never get ahead in life if you keep waiting for things to happen. So my challenge to you: Do Epic Shit.
Quit waiting for permission. Stop being afraid to fail. Get out there and just do it. Then, come back and tell me all about it and we’ll do a toast together.
Deal?

Sometimes things need an explicative…..
@NashaWilliamsSnipes Sometimes it’s needed to help drive a point home. Hopefully in this case, in a good way…
I wish I’d written this, although my demographic recoils at curse words and so I have to parse them out carefully. Also, women risk social rejection if they cuss, http://dooku.miun.se/engelska/englishC/C-essay/HT03/Final/Annika%20Svensson.pdf, which doesn’t seem effing fair to me.
But it was short and to the point. And true. Thanks for the validation that I’m going in the right direction.
Chloe
@chloeofthemountain When we’re young, we sometimes don’t hear the advice other people give us. So I chose these words for added effect. Some of this advice frankly, I could have heard years ago. And my younger brother could benefit from hearing them today (he’s in a place where he’s trying to figure things out for himself).
But anyway, you’re right, that doesn’t seem effin’ fair. In fact, you have free reign to let out a cuss word or two and I’ll still love you for commenting and being all around awesome!
Thanks for the comment Chloe ๐
Studies show that a well-placed cuss word relieves stress and releases endorphins. And everything you said was right on. I hope to read some more good shit from you in the future.

@chloeofthemountain Re: “I hope to read some more good shit from you in the future.” LOL! You got it ๐
Nice post. Have you read Do the Work by Steven Pressfield? Similar story, that and War of Art are 2 of my top motivators of all time.
@Prozaakk I’m actually just reading that now ๐
@mike_nunes Thanks for the RT
Great advice. Sometimes I have been my most successful when I have practiced the “ready, fire, aim” process versus the detailed analysis which often bogs me down! Thanks for giving it a formal name!
10. Stop reading about doing epic shit.
11. The most epic shit is that which helps others, either directly or indirectly. If you’re mostly helping yourself, it’s just personal shit.
Best title ever? Think so. We’re often held back by being afraid of what we might accomplish…having someone tell me to go out there and “do epic shit” makes me smile and feel invigorated. After all…who doesn’t want to go out and do epic shit? ๐
Nailed it, plain and simple. That’s Epic!
Agree with you there @annedreshfield ! The title grabs ya and the simple message makes my blood flow.
Maybe and yes @contentsherpa ! LOL! Reading about a refresher to do epic shit is added time investment.
And if you can’t do something Epic, at least do Something. Can you imagine how many people would take more action if what they did with most of their time was going to be written on their headstone? “Watched reruns of Medium”, “Dreamt of a better life” “Chronic navel gazing.” “Followed.” The very idea sucks. If you wouldn’t want to be discovered dead in the middle of what you’re doing right now, wrap that up and do something else!
Go! Go! Go!
@kiasuchick gracias
@WordsDoneWrite Bring it!
@Tinu Agreed. It’s nice when you can end a day/week with a good sense of accomplishment. Yes, that even includes the little things ๐
@Nakeva Thanks Nakeva!
@annedreshfield Thank you Anne. Though the picture did help ๐ And sometimes, well, it needs to be said that way for added effect and so that the message clicks. I’m glad I could inspire you if even just a little today ๐
@contentsherpa Heh, agree with number ten. You can’t keep trying to plan everything and reading to prepare how to do it. At some point, you just have to drop things and actually DO it. Whatever that is.
Also, I do agree with your last point. There’s a certain sense of accomplishment and a special kind of feeling when you know that what you’re doing is helping others in some small way.
Thanks for the comment and for adding to the discussion!
@TheProgressiveBroker Heh, my pleasure. And you’re right. I think too often, we get caught up in the planning phase. And that was my point here. You can’t wait around and keep trying to plan everything to perfection. Because ultimately, that leads to very little action on whatever it is you may be trying to accomplish. And that’s now way to live (personally or professionally).
@LisaMacDonald Thank you ๐
@bryanmcdee thanks Bryan
LOVE IT! Monday, here I come!
@NickBurman There ya go… BRING IT!
@JWean Thanks Jeremiah. Just remember it come Monday ๐
@HeydayJules ๐
@iamjodyjelas why thank you ๐
Hello from CoWorking!! I love your list!! Do epic shit sounds like something Gary Vaynerchuk (who I love!!) would say!!
@joannegreco Heh, why thank you. But in this case, I’ll take all the credit ๐
Nice. WAY nice.ย
Thanks man, appreciate it ๐ย
P.S. You don’t always need money to do EPIC shit.
True dat my friend…true dat!
I WANT to post this to Twitter, but I don’t curse on my page. So I will leave a comment and FB like instead, LOL. This is an oldie, but goodie! -XO
Spawned by a conversation that I had with my younger brother and while reflecting on things… Gotta make things happen and stop making excuses ya know.ย
Thanks for the love!
In my case, I had to silence the inner critic and the naysayers around me. I agree with you though. If you want something, you have to just go for it ๐
Naysayers are the most dangerous kind of company to keep around. They suck all of the energy and life out of you. I few of those people are close friends and even family. But there comes a point where enough is enough, and you have to do things for you…ย
Ironically, I needed to hear this today! I am sitting on a few things that I know are good and need to do them. ย Thanks for the push! ๐
Neoma: Get down to it! I’m gonna check in on you on Friday ๐ย
Ironically, I needed to hear this today! I am sitting on a few things that I know are good and need to do them. ย Thanks for the push! ๐
You should rename this ” the official 8 rules to live life by or shit or get off the pot.”. Spread the word brother.
Heh, thanks Ryan!
Have a great day!
It just felt like you are talking to me, coz right now I am faced with challenges and nothing seem to go right… but thank you for the words of wisdom… I feel better now…
ย I’m glad I could help, if even just a little. Every now and then, we all need to listen to some of this advice (myself included).
These words are so timely for today for me! Thank you! I now have permission to do my trip without all the months of planning naysayers think I need.
ย You’re always good to go… Crush it Jeanette!
As They say, “Action Speaks Louder Than Words”, and maybe thoughts too.
ย You have to think it, then do it!
Good advice!
Thanks Thea!ย
My problem is there is always more epic shit to do than their is time to do it.
Hey Sterling, I hear ya there… I’m working on turning insomnia into a global movement ๐ย
My problem is there is always more epic shit to do than their is time to do it.
Thanks for inspiring me today!
Barce my friend, you are very welcome!
You are hilarious, LOL
There is always a time and place for everybody. Looks like you’ve connected with some people that are in the time and the place of your message. Good for you and have a great week!
